A ‘Green’ Evening of Moonlight, Music & Magic (8/14)

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens’ festive garden party on Thursday, August 14, will be as green as can be. Chair Shery Kerr and other volunteers, as well as the Gardens staff, have gone to great lengths to create an event that leaves the smallest possible carbon footprint.

For example, the invitation – a postcard rather than a note card with envelopes and RSVP card – is printed with soy-based inks on recycled, chlorine-free paper manufactured with wind power. Guests’ nametags will be of recycled paper with wildflower seeds embedded in it. Candles are made of soy with 100 percent cotton wicks. The beautiful decorations will be created using materials found right at the Gardens.

The menu is big news. The selections from caterer Belle Fête of Brunswick are Maine-based, organic, in-season foods. The scallops and other seafood served will be just off the boat that morning. The open bar will feature organic wines, beers, and spirits. Cocktails will be served beginning at 6:30 p.m., with dinner at 7:30.

Music will be by The Coronados, thought by many to be the finest dance band in Maine. They will play for guests’ dancing and listening enjoyment, and they’ll take requests (in return for a donation to the Gardens).

The event, ‘An Evening of Moonlight, Music & Magic,’ will be in a spectacular clear structure added to the Cleaver Event Lawn and Garden just for the occasion. This will be a rare opportunity to experience the Gardens in the evening, by moonlight.

The single item in the evening’s silent auction will be an exceptional Christmas tree skirt designed and embroidered with traditional Santas by Gardens past-president and founding member Claire Hunt, who serves on the Board of Overseers.

‘Go-Green’ Prius Raffle Drawing

An exciting feature of the party will be the announcement of the winner of the Gardens’ raffle for the Toyota Prius hybrid car currently on display outside the Gardens’ Visitor Center. Tickets for this silvery-green car worth $28,000 are $100 each, and only 500 will be sold. They are available in the Visitor Center at the Gardens.

The Other Kind of Green - Benefiting the Gardens

It’s all about the green in another sense, too, because this event is a major fundraiser for the Gardens. Tickets are $150 per person, $75 of which is tax-deductible. Proceeds support garden and program operations.

The Gardens are on Barters Island Road. Guests will also enjoy seeing the Central Gardens in full bloom and will marvel at the new water features and plantings. For reservations, fill out the form below, call the Gardens at (207) 633-4333, or visit mainegardens.org.
