One favorite walk is from the Visitor Center through the Central Gardens, down the Hillside Garden trail to the Shoreland Trail. This trail makes a loop that connects with the Birch Allée, which is your route back to the Visitor Center. Of course there are fascinating detours along the way to visit the amazing Meditation Garden and the magical Fairy Village, and stops for “art appreciation” of our many outdoor pieces of sculpture and to savor the sparkling water views. Fortunately, along the pathways and trails there are magnificent stone benches situated where you can best admire your surroundings.

While you’re exploring, be sure to visit the Rhododendron & Perennial Garden, just a short walk from the Birch Allée where it meets the Shoreland Trail. Along its stone-terraced paths above a tranquil pond are some of the most impressive plantings at the Gardens: 10,000 spring bulbs, more than 100 rhododendrons, flowering kousa dogwood trees, and much, much more. From the massive Belvedere Bench overlooking the entire garden to the broad steps that tumble right down to the water’s edge, the stonework in this area is stunning.

If you find you’d like to learn more about the Gardens, why not sign up for a “Wednesday Walk” with an expert or stop by for one of the Drop-In Highlights Tours we offer from summer into fall, with no reservations necessary.
