Staff Picks
Right now the plant that I get asked about the most is Fritillaria persica. This tall, perennial bulb can be found in a number of locations around the gardens, including around the Great Lawn and in the Burpee Kitchen Garden. The deep purple, almost black blossoms are pendulous and numerous, and this ephemeral plant makes a great addition to any garden! – Syretha, horticulturist
Dodecatheon clevelandii (Padre’s Shootinstar) of the primrose family is native to California, but happy grows by the bridge in the Lerner Garden of the Five Senses. – Anna L., horticulturist
Jack in the pulpit (Arisaema triphyllum ssp. stewardsonii ‘Wide Whale Corduroy’) is one of the shade loving plants in the Children’s Garden. Going back centuries as a mysterious and poisonous flower, Native Americans actually found ways to dry and eat the root! Don’t try at home though, as the roots have millions of calcium oxalate crystals that can cause severe blistering when touched. Keep an eye out for the beautiful berries, but do not eat! – Tobi, public horticulture intern
A native to Eastern Asia, this early season woodland peony (Paeonia obovata ssp.) offers a beautiful detailed white flower in the Lerner Garden! – Sarah S., horticulturist
Stewartsonian azalea in the Giles Rhododendron Garden next to the waterfall is a crazy scarlet red color! – Courtney, horticulturist
This large beauty is Rhododendron ‘Hal Bruce,’ found to the right of the lower entrance to the Giles Rhododendron Garden. The gorgeous peach-colored blossoms are coming out, and are not to be missed! – Leah, public horticulture intern
‘Mood Indigo’ tulips are still looking wonderful in the Lerner Garden. – Will, horticulturist
Hellebore Heronswood Double Dark Lenton Rose is beautiful in the Vayo Mediation Garden – Patty, horticulturist
A true perennial from the rocky dry alpine regions of central Asia, Tuplia tarda is tolerant of our continental climate (hot summer, cold winter). These are located in the Giles Rhododendron Garden. – Dan, horticulturist
This Himalayan Mayapple (Podophyllum hexandrum ‘Majus’) adds an exotic touch to the garden. I love the umbrella shaped leaves which have a glossy appearance and add textual variety to the garden. The large white flowers pop in contrast to the foliage. I just have to stop and admire this bloom in the Children’s Garden! – Siubhan, public horticulture intern
Rhododendron Solidarity in Giles Rhododendron Garden to the left of waterfall has beautiful fuchsia buds and softer pink flowers. – Courtney, horticulturist
This Paeonia mlokosewitschii ‘Red Form’ peony offers a splash of red color as you move about the Lerner Garden that really catches the eye! – Sarah S., horticulturist
