Fall Botanicals: Still Life in Acrylics

Tuesday-Thursday, October 11-13

Create beautiful still life paintings in a relaxed atmosphere using fall botanicals. We will aim to complete at least one painting per day with an emphasis on “alla prima” or “all at once” painting (completing a painting in one sitting). There will be short demos and plenty of individual attention throughout the three-day workshop. Using materials from the Gardens, students will arrange their own still life “bouquets,” keeping the composition simple (four or fewer objects). Participants will be encouraged to interpret rather than replicate a still life set-up, using brush strokes, colors, imagination, and creativity. We will paint together, share our setups and paintings, and have some fun while we’re at it!

Susan Bartlett Rice is best known for her colorful paintings of Maine and, more recently, for her large-scale public murals in Damariscotta, Portland, Biddeford, and Portsmouth. Rice’s education includes a BA in studio art and art history from the University of Vermont with further studies in illustration at the Rhode Island School of Design. She has held positions at the RISD Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Her work is shown in both public and private collections and has been featured in ArtNews, Downeast Magazine and Maine Magazine.
