Second Nature by Michael Pollan

Now a literary gardening classic, Second Nature is how many people first became drawn to Michael Pollan’s work about the natural world. Combining enthusiasm, humility, and a huge dose of laugh-out-loud humor, Pollan writes about his first garden. Whether it’s a war with a woodchuck or thinking philosophically about humanity’s relation to nature, Pollan is always highly entertaining. No matter if you haven’t read this or are reading it again, this book is a cornerstone of any gardener’s library.

Woodsqueer: Crafting a Rural Sustainable Life by Gretchen Legler

A term used to describe those who return to the wild for a time, Woodsqueer is a thoughtful reflection on living a rural and more sustainable life. Building a home and crafting a life closer to nature and self-sufficiency with her partner on 80 acres in Maine comes with challenges, both personal and physical. From raising goats and chickens for food to foraging for wild plants and putting up enough wood for winter, they develop those forgotten skills needed to live an authentic life now and into the future.
