This week, genera of special interest for flower enthusiasts include leopard plants (Ligularia), daylilies (Hemerocallis), and lilies (Lilium). Some current highlights include the blooms of the eastern prickly pear cactus (Opuntia humifusa) – visible in the overlook in the Arbor garden, and the deep purple blooms of the Japanese water irises (Iris ensata) in the Lerner Garden of the Five Senses. Check out the aptly named buds of the balloon flower (Platycodon spp.), which puff up like hot air balloons before unfurling into star–shaped blossoms.
