The Gardens Gains Two New Global Accreditations

Conservation, Partnerships, Research, Sustainability

Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens is excited to share that we have recently gained two new global botanic garden accreditations! Accreditations are programs that verify that a public garden meets set standards and best practices for public gardens and arboreta.

The Gardens achieved botanic garden accreditation through Botanic Gardens Conservation International, a global organization that promotes the conservation activities of botanic gardens and connects public gardens that conserve plant life. This accreditation verifies that Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens meets assessment criteria in governance, staffing, educational programs, public access, inclusion and diversity, sustainability, curation, plant conservation, and plant science.

With trees and other woody plants comprising a sizable portion of our living collections, we are pleased to also have received accreditation as Level III Arboretum through the ArbNet program of the Morton Arboretum and the American Public Gardens Association. A Level III accreditation indicates curation of at least 500 species, varieties, or cultivars of trees or woody plants and an active conservation program with dedicated staff and resources. The Gardens are one of only 46 institutions globally that have achieved Level III accreditation.

These accreditations are an essential new benchmark in the evolution and growth of Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. They provide a wider group of peer organizations for collaboration and eligibility for funding to continue our mission-driven plant science, conservation, and curation work. Thank you most sincerely to our generous community, which has contributed in many diverse ways to our ability to achieve these new accreditations over time since our founding.
