Spring Explorations: Pond Life (Ages 3-7)

The Gardens is full of beauty and wonder thriving aboveground, but there’s plenty to discover below the surface! Join us as we explore the life thriving in the depths and shallows of our ponds. Together, we’ll search for aquatic critters, learning about their lives in the process. Participants will create a fun frog craft to help them remember everything they learned during the program.

This is a parent/child program. Admission to the Gardens for one child and one adult is included with class registration.

Budding Naturalist: Advanced Spring Botany (Ages 10-16)

Continuing our botanical explorations, we’ll go in search of some of the wildflowers calling the Gardens home. If still blooming, we’ll revisit specimens from the previous session in more depth along with any new flowers that have sprung up. Participants will practice thinking like a botanist, learning more about the plant identification process and using a key to identify specific characteristics of these wildflowers. Participants do not need to have taken the beginner class in order to participate in this class.

Planting a Pollinator Garden (Ages 8+)

Do you have a nature-loving child interested in attracting more pollinators to the garden? This kid-friendly gardening class delves into our native pollinators’ unique adaptations and special flower preferences, reviewing the process of pollination through a flower dissection. Class will then head out into the Gardens to discover some of the best flower choices for a diverse pollinator garden, and participants will receive plants and seeds to take home. Choosing native plants for your landscape should be fun and creative, not daunting or complicated! When you consider plants in simple groupings, or guilds, it becomes a lot easier to design a landscape with appealing texture, color, and wildlife value throughout the seasons. Native plant guilds draw on inspiration from natural plant communities in habitats like coastal plains, forests, wetlands, or mountain tops.

Plant a Mini Alpine & Rock Garden

Rock garden and alpine plants are wonderful additions to any garden, bursting with fine details particularly suited to up-close viewing. Exploring Landscape through Encaustic Painting

Monday and Tuesday, June 20 and 21 | In this hands-on workshop, develop sketches, photographs, or landscape visions into encaustic paintings by exploring a rich variety of marks, transfer, and stencil techniques. Class time will be divided between demonstration, individual work time, and discussion about Maine art and its contemporary and historical connection to landscape. We’ll chat about proper studio ventilation, wax safety, and how to “finish” artworks in terms of framing and care. Using your iPhone or iPad, advance your digital photography skills in this exciting hands-on workshop. Join artist and iPhoneography innovator Kimberly Post on photographic explorations through the Gardens, learning to capture nature in uniquely creative ways. Back in the classroom, we’ll work with a variety of editing apps to enhance our photos and create images, building a digital portfolio. Paper Art Workshop (Ages 8-14) (Sold Out)

Wednesday, July 6-Friday, July 8

Observe nature and get creative as we delve into the ancient—and modern—techniques of paper arts. Over three days, young artists will create prints from plant materials, play with colors, positive and negative space, layering, and patterns, all resulting in unique works of art. Create mesmerizing patterns and designs using a process called paper marbling, a technique dating back to the 12th century. Learn paper-making, recycling old paper into new, and experimenting with thickness and style. Use Gardens-gathered plant material to add finesse to finished products. On the final day, we’ll use this paper to produce pages and covers for handmade sketchbooks, journals, or notebooks!

Integrated Pest and Disease Management

This one-day class will cover extensive ground on the insects, diseases, and deficiencies found on plants in the landscape. Applying principles of integrated pest management (IPM), the course will help students identify, monitor, and prevent poor plant health and, when necessary, deal with treatments. State Horticulturalist Gary Fish will emphasize preventative measures and help students determine the methods to mitigate further plant-pest problems.

Nature Art Camp: Drawing Blooms and Butterflies (Ages 7-12) (Sold Out)

Monday, July 11-Friday, July 15

Young artists put their investigative skills to work as they collect, study, identify, and illustrate the Gardens’ butterflies and the flowers and plants they depend on. Daily, participants will explore and sketch on-location in the Gardens, developing a strong foundation of observation, drawing, and painting skills, simultaneously creating a portfolio of beautiful studies and illustrations using pencil, pen and ink, colored pencil, and watercolor. Students also gain an understanding and appreciation for the important role these pollinators play in our gardens. All art supplies are included with this camp.

Hélène Farrar has taught and worked in the visual arts for twenty years, actively exhibiting in commercial, nonprofit, and university galleries in New England, New York City, Pennsylvania, Italy, and England. Farrar has a BA in studio art from the University of Maine and an MFA in interdisciplinary arts from Goddard College in Vermont. Hélène currently owns and operates a private art school out of her Maine “farmhouse” studio where she holds a variety of workshops and classes for children and adults.

Create your own Kokedama (Ages 14+)

Unique, exceptional and magical are just some of the adjectives used to describe kokedama, the Japanese art of growing plants in a moss-covered ball of soil, 6-8 inches in diameter. They can be displayed on a decorative surface of your choice, hung from a tree branch, pergola ceiling, arbor, or bracket. In this class for all ages, horticulturist Jen Dunlap will guide you in creating three kokedama projects for your home garden. These verdant, living globes add whimsy, mystery, and vertical interest to your outdoor living space. All supplies provided.

Wabanaki Essentials: Tools for Life and Home

Long before products manufactured from metals, plastics, or synthetics were widely available, essential daily tools like pots, baskets, bowls, and utensils were handmade from elements found in nature. In this all-ages class, learn how the Wabanaki made such daily essentials and how these traditions live on, connecting people to earth and to heritage. Learn from Barry Dana (Penobscot) and Lori Dana as they share stories, describing how to know what natural elements are used for what function and where they can be found, as well as the making process, produced by hand without the need for electricity, oil, coal, or metal. To finish class, you'll learn how to braid traditional bass rope.

Creating a Miniature Garden (Ages 8+)

This fun and family-friendly hands-on workshop will have you exploring your gardening creativity—in miniature! First, learn about and draw inspiration from several different types of miniature gardens including “fairy gardens” and Japanese gardens. Then, using wide shallow containers, small plants, fairy garden accessories, and other tiny elements, create a personalized miniature garden to take home. Gathering in the Garden: Poetry and Book Arts

Tuesday and Wednesday, July 26 and 27 | This intensive, two-day course explores and unites two creative processes: poetry and the visual arts. Taking inspiration from the forms, colors, and inhabitants of the Gardens, students will write, illustrate, and design an artists’ book, including a two-pamphlet paperback journal, a flag book, and a layered accordion book. Day one begins in the classroom, then moves into the Gardens for inspiration. Day two begins with poetry prompts, then students will venture off on their own to create patterns in poetic response to the Gardens. Students will also gain a playful acquaintance with poetic forms like the villanelle, the sestina, and the pantoum.

Campers will spend the week getting up close and personal with the amazing pollinators making all of our gardens possible. Through games, activities, observations, and visits to our Native Butterfly and Moth House, honeybee hives, and annual resident exhibition, The Caterpillar Lab, campers will learn the ins and outs of pollination. Each day will focus on a different pollinator and its unique adaptations.

Beginning Mosaics from A-Z

Monday and Tuesday, August 8 and 9 | Join us to learn a brief history of the intriguing art of mosaic, including information on materials, substrates, and tools. Experience hands-on the different methods of working—direct, indirect, and double reverse—by using these methods to make a tile each day of class. We’ll talk about andamento, or way mosaic tiles are laid, as well as use of color and tile shape.

Plant ID & Ecology: Native Deciduous Shrubs

Either way, join Emily Baisden, entomology and native shrub aficionado, to learn about the extensive selection of native deciduous shrubs available for your garden. We’ll cover the ecosystem services provided by native shrubs, from pollinator hosts to erosion control, as well as how to select the right species for your space, taking into consideration environmental characteristics and seasonal qualities.

Budding gardeners will spend the week digging, planting, watering, and harvesting fruits and veggies in our Learning Garden. Campers will investigate the inner workings of the garden from the ground up and get the real “dirt” on plants, life cycles, composting, garden critters, and more! Beautiful Buds and Blossoms in Colored Pencil

Monday-Wednesday, August 15-17 | Join instructor Kate MacGillivary for this three-day class focusing on rendering the beautiful details of garden blossoms and buds in colored pencil. Designed for students with some previous drawing experience, this class offers plenty of time to create a beautiful drawing. Kate will give students the time and attention needed to get a wonderful feel for the medium of colored pencil. Plant material for students to study and draw will be provided.

10 Medicinal Plants: Morphology and Uses

In this workshop and field-study class, herbalism practitioner and staff horticulturalist Lesley Paxson will review 10 specific plants used for their medicinal applications. Lesley will take students around the Gardens, examining the morphology (form and structure) of each plant, describing key chemical constituents, and sharing details about what and when to harvest, plant folklore, and history. Students will forage from the select plants, sample recipes derived from traditional methods, and learn how to process their collected materials, once home. Come with an airtight bag or jar in which to preserve your collections.

This class will guide students through the best design and management strategies that work in unison with nature, encouraging and embracing biodiversity and sustaining healthy, low-maintenance gardens. Wildlife in the Backyard: Insects (Ages 14+) (Cancelled)

Want to enter the world of beetles, butterflies, bees, grasshoppers, wasps, and flies? Ages 14-adult are invited to join us and learn about the insect wildlife to be found in backyards and gardens. Learn to identify the most common insects and the roles these important creatures play in their ecosystems. After an introductory slideshow, we'll explore the Gardens to observe and gain insight into insect behavior, identifying where insects prefer to live versus where they’re discouraged. We'll take a holistic approach to studying insects, recognizing that even the smallest patch of yard is inclusive of nature.
